Nicholas Sarkozy is not a new figure to controversy, and his latest idea has not been so popular with the international community. Interesting as this may seem, poll results show that 48% of the French actually support Sarkozy on this issue. While the many claims of discrimination or violation of human rights may be valid (its a matter of opinion) many people do see the Roma (Gypsies) in France as problematic. The reasons, ofcourse, could vary. It could be that they are against illegal immigration in general or perhaps they had a negative experience (or a few) with the Roma in their day to day lives. Many feel that its not a solution to deport them. That its unfair. When such statements are made, the Roma are considered first and foremost. These solutions are not for the Roma. They are for France.
Perhaps more efforts could have been made to integrate the Roma into society. Would these prove to be promising? Who knows?
Whether you love or hate Sarkozy, this man is not afraid to make controversial move.
Let me know your thoughts.
